#5OnMyTBR — Historical - Hsinju’s Lit Log
Hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook, #5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme where we talk about 5 books on our TBR on Mondays. You can learn more about it in E.’s original announcement or #5OnMyTBR page. This week’s prompt: Historical. Growing up, I read a lot of historical fantasy in Chinese, namely, martial arts (wuxia) novels. I love historical fiction, with or without fantasy elements, and here are five LGBTQ+ historical fiction I am excited to read. Click on the book cover for more info on Goodreads. Unmasked by the Marquess (Regency Imposters #1) by Cat Sebastian Publisher: Avon Impulse, April 17th 2018 Keywords: historical, romance, nonbinary Confession here: I have never read anything by Cat Sebastian. I was recently convinced to try, and I am especially interested in Unmasked by the Marquess since it is an m/nb romance! Thanks to Laura @lezreadlot for the recommendation. Check out her review on Goodreads. Mrs. Martin’s Incomparable Adventure (The Worth Saga #2.75) by Courtney Milan Publisher: Self-Published, March 26th 2019 Keywords: historical, romance, novella, older women, sapphic Another shocking thing is that I have also never read Courtney Milan. This novella is an f/f romance between older women (seventy-three and sixty-nine, I think) and if that isn’t the best thing, I don’t know what is. Also, this is one of Tara Scott’s favorite books. You can read her review on The Lesbian Review. The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donoghue Publisher: Picador, July 2020 Keywords: historical, romance, medical, the Great Flu, WWI, sapphic I am getting into a pattern of including books by famous, prolific authors whose works I haven’t read yet. Just because this book was recently out and Wendy’s wonderful review on Goodreads, I got a copy, deciding it should be my first Donoghue read. I think there is also a pandemic going on in the story. Timely. Heart of Gold (Heart #1) by Luci Dreamer Publisher: Self-Published, April 27th 2020 Keywords: historical, romance, gold rush, disguise as a man, butch/femme, sapphic In martial arts novels, many women dressed up as men so that they’d be able to do whatever they want. None of the ones I’ve read were sapphic, however. The first disguise-as-a-man f/f romance I’ve ever read was Jae’s Backwards to Oregon, and when I found out Dreamer’s Heart of Gold is yet another one, I know I have to read it. Here is a short review from Jude @ Jude in the Stars to help you decide whether it’s for you, too. Cantoras by Carolina De Robertis Publisher: Knopf, September 3rd 2019 Keywords: historical, Uruguay, queer, Latinx/e, sapphic I can never say no to sapphic literary fiction, and with the historical theme, I am even surer about reading it. In fact, I recently got a copy after reading Gaby’s review at LezReviewBooks. I bet you will, too, after reading her review. Have you read any of these? What are your #5OnMyTBR of historical fiction? Comment what you think! For more of my reviews and other whatnots, follow my blog, Twitter, Instagram, and friend me on Goodreads.
