Day 7. New York – Philadelphia: Port Authority. Snap Kitchen. University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). Campo’s Philly Cheesesteaks. [City House Hostel Philadelphia]
It was some time after 10 am when I finally got up to pack. The check-out time was 11 am and my bus ($13.50 including taxes & fees) was at noon.
Bus
I nearly didn’t make it because I got to the wrong boarding gate at first. The boarding process started just shortly after I arrived at the line. I had hoped to do some work on the bus, but ended up dozing off about halfway through the 2-hour trip. When I finally woke up, I was in Philadelphia.
Checking In
Dragging my luggage for about 7 blocks, I was one block away from my hostel when I saw food. It was a clean little shop, with healthy-looking meals. I went into Snap Kitchen, wanting brunch at 2:30 pm. I ordered a crunchy coconut shrimp ($9.99 excluding tax), and it wasn’t too bad. The meal also came with some mango sauce.
Since check-in started at around 3 pm, it was perfect timing after I finished my food, and I got settled at City House Hostel Philadelphia ($39.43 for 2 nights in mixed dorm).
University Sightseeing
University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) was just a couple of subway stations away, so I hopped on a train ($2.00) and went to see the campus. It felt like an old school, with buildings everywhere, and since I left the hostel around 4 pm, it was getting dark. I couldn’t see much, but still got a glimpse of UPenn. I also got to see some buildings of the school of engineering. Night was really falling, so I took the subway back to Old City ($1.00 as transfer) around 5:30 pm for dinner.
Cheesesteak
Philadelphia is famous for its cheesesteak, there is no doubt about that. I went to Campo’s Philly Cheesesteaks (cash only) for dinner. For a $9.00 (excluding tax) cheesesteak, I didn’t think the portion would be as big as it was. Because I have always liked cheesesteaks, I find Campo’s very delicious. There were a bit of tendons in the beef, but it wasn’t too bad. Nothing can go wrong with bread, beef, and cheese combo.
Summary
Tomorrow is the only full day I have in Philadelphia. I hope to have more cheesesteaks and visit some touristy attractions!
