#5OnMyTBR — Mystery

Hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook, #5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme where we talk about 5 books on our TBR on Mondays.

This week’s prompt: Mystery.

To be honest, I don’t read a lot of mystery. While I do enjoy the genre, I never actively seek them out. It might have something to do with my faint of heart, but every once in a while, reading a good mystery spices up my reading journey.

The #5OnMyTBR this week are all written by women, one of them of color. Two of the five books are sapphic, and another two are not yet published.

And Now She’s Gone by Rachel Howzell Hall

This book is supposed to be about a woman tracking down another who doesn’t want to be found. The blurb sounds very exciting as there seem to be many secrets hanging around. I am excited to start this soon.

The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins

Cover of The Wife Upstairs

I have never read the gothic classic Jane Eyre. Ever. But if The Wife Upstairs is giving the 19th century novel a modern twist, I want to read it. The story seems like a messy suspense, and I am a little scared. Hopefully it will be a thrilling read and not a terrifying one.

Payback by Charlotte Mills

Cover of Payback

This is one of the backlist DRCs Ylva Publishing has generously offered me. Since Mills has a sequel Fair Game coming out soon, I wanted to read Payback first. Nearly all of my friends on Goodreads have rated it 5-star, and I definitely have to read this lesbian* mystery.

* The phrase “lesbian mystery” is in the blurb, though it might just mean sapphic. We’ll see what both the main characters identify as when I get to it.

Trigger (A Dr. Kate Morrison Mystery #1) by Jessica L. Webb

Cover of Trigger

Again, almost all of my friends rated this one 5-star, so when I had the chance, I grabbed a copy on the publisher’s website. I promise my friends do not rate everything 5 stars. The main character is Dr. Kate Morrison and her case involves human bombs. Yikes! I am already intrigued after reading the synopsis. Plus, the last (and only) Webb book I have read, Storm Lines, was pretty good, so I want to try more of her works.

First Blood (D.I. Kim Stone #0.5) by Angela Marsons

Cover of First Blood

Several people from my sapphic connections on Goodreads have been talking nonstop about the D.I. Kim Stone series, which is non-LGBTQ+, and it has become something all of us want to read. Kim Stone seems very bad-ass, so sign me up!

Have you read any of these books? What are your #5OnMyTBR in mystery? Comment what you think!
