Last year, I spent most of my December drinking glühwein (mulled wine) in Chicago’s Christkindlmarket. Nothing gets more holiday-like than that.
Even though Taipei is not half as cold (low 20s in ºC or 70-ish ºF), a sweet spiced cup of wine sounds just right for Christmas Eve.
Rezept für Glühwein
Ingredients
1 bio orange / Bio Orange
0.5 lemon / Zitrone
25g sugar / Zucker
1 cinnamon stick / Zimtstange
6 cloves / Gewürznelken
0.75l red wine / Rotwein
200ml water / Wasser
- Pour the water into a pot. Add orange juice & zest, lemon juice & zest, sugar, cinnamon stick, and cloves and bring them close to simmering.
- Turn down the heat and add half a bottle of red wine.
- After warming added wine, turn off the heat and let the pot sit in room temperature for about an hour.
- Add the rest of the red wine and heat before drinking.
Where to Get the Ingredients in Taiwan
I got my bio orange at PXmart for NT$20 ($0.66). If you have trouble finding the spices, go to Dihua Street (迪化街). One cinnamon stick costs about NT$10 ($0.33). You do not need very good red wine for this drink, so I used a M.A.N. shiraz from Costco for NT$229 ($7.60).
My family prefers drinks that are not too sweet, and hence we minimised the added sugar. The usual recipe should be more than 100g of sugar for one bottle of red wine. This recipe serves 3–4 people.
