The Blood of Olympus (The Heroes of Olympus #5) by Rick Riordan
- Publisher: Puffin Books, 2014
- Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult
- Format: Ebook
- Page Count: 516 pages
- My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)
It has been four years since I read book 4, back when The Blood of Olympus wasn’t even released.
And now, in 2018, I finally finished the series.
Rick is rather amazing, maintaining both prolificacy and quality. Though I do understand that, compared with most fantasy novels, Rick’s worlds are based on mythologies, and mythologies had already decided the powers of gods for him, so there was little he could do about the fantasy elements. Still, his books contain quite some thrills. And I have to say I love how he writes not only Greek mythology, but also the Roman one. I have been obsessed with ancient Rome for as long as I remember and so it feels weirdly comforting to see the legion yell in Latin. Gratias tibi ago, Richarde!
*deep breath* Can we take a minute and appreciate how amazing Nico is?! He is not an obvious star like Percy or Jason, but still! From the very beginning of the series, I always find him intimidating yet very interesting: his inhuman ability to endure pain and anger without much outlet, his determination when he is dead set on achieving his goals, his scary underworldly stuff, etc. He is one of my two favourite characters (the other being Thalia, but I don’t remember much about her now). I love seeing him being a little more open about himself in this book, and how he’s always willing to push his limits for the good of everyone else.
Also, I believe Percy forgot about Calypso, again.
There are some tender moments between the characters throughout the book, and I like the fact that this series is not only adventure-packed, peppered with some teenage romance, but there are also some seriously beautiful friendships going on.
Recommended for people who loves YA and fantasy, but probably not for those who like complicated plots. [29 Apr 2018]
