The Mercenary’s Daughter by Jessica Therrien, Joe Gazzam

This book was definitely not what I had expected. I was annoyed if not angry at the usage of “exotic” on Andy, so let’s just say The Mercenary’s Daughter did not leave a great first impression. However, plot-wise, it really amazed me. It was exciting and made my heart thump.

Tara and Mitch were the ultimate sibling team with Tara being familiar with weaponry and missions while Mitch excelled at science and schemes. Along with Andy, the local guide and an enemy of the enemy, their Cuban adventure of rescuing Harry was thrilling to read.

“[A]s sure as people live, they die. But as long as they do both with purpose, there’s never much to regret.”

Mitch recounting Harry’s words

There were a lot of stealing, hijacking, and shooting in the book, but all of them were necessary evils. I appreciated Tara as a strong female character. I also really liked Mitch, the smart teen. During the Cuban trip, Tara and Mitch were figuring out what it meant to be a family, and it was honestly touching to see them ultimately working together. With the life of Harry, their dad, at stake, the siblings had to learn to trust each other again.

To me that meant a whole lot of rich people born on third base, thinking they hit a triple.

Tara

I admit the many plans of Tara, Mitch and Andy were risky at best, but most schemes were smart. That made the book captivating.

Though a quick read, The Mercenary’s Daughter is not a simple book. It was exciting in every way. I am sure there is a sequel to this book, and I look very much forward to a full story of the Kafee family. In addition, I really hope Tara would be able to speak up about her “dishonourable discharge.” Maybe both would be present in the next book, if there is one. I cannot wait. [16 Mar 2020]
