The Tea Dragon Society (Tea Dragon #1) by Kay O’Neill

So many people my age have claimed they would read this series to their future children, and I totally share that sentiment. The illustration style is adorable and calming. Without outlines, the texture seemed softer and colour palette even warmer. I love how even when the panels are character closeups, the background is still lush with greenery and flora.

For the fantasy element, Tea Dragons are the cutest idea. They grow herbs on their head and are mostly the size of puppies. Along with the theme of tea, I find the furniture and setting having Japanese and Chinese vibes. And the wonderful nature surroundings make the comics relaxing. The cast is beautifully diverse and not full-humans (maybe Erik, who seems to be paralysed waist down, is). I especially love Greta’s energy and curiosity. Her facial expressions stole my heart many times.

O’Neill’s first Tea Dragon graphic novel put a smile on my face through the whole reading. It is a story about heritage and creating memories. [27 Jun 2020]
