WLW Wednesday

WLW Wednesday — 26 Aug 2020

I think it is safe to say that WLW Wednesday has become a bookish meme among bloggers who read sapphic books. Hosted by Sasha and Amber @ Sasha and Amber Read, we are encouraged share our recent wlw/sapphic reads every week or two.

Last week was the first time I participated in WLW Wednesday, and I love how this meme provides us a platform to talk endlessly about sapphics.

As some of you might have noticed, I read mostly indie- and self-published books when it comes to wlw fiction. A few of my favorite LGBTQ+ publishing houses are Bold Strokes Books, Ylva Publishing, Bywater Books, and NineStar Press, and I regularly review their new releases. I also tend to talk nonstop about any self-published books I love. So, if you love to see more reviews of newly released sapphic fiction or hear me gush about fictional sapphic love, please subscribe to my blog or follow me on Twitter, and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Also, I am super excited to announce that I will be posting a list of 2021 sapphic releases from LGBTQ+ indie publishers next week! So stay tuned for more information on amazing books to look forward to next year! I know everyone is just so done with 2020, so can 2021 come sooner?

In the meantime, check out the amazing list of 2021 sapphic releases on Sasha and Amber Read!

This week, I read three sapphic novels and one queer literary fiction with sapphic side characters. All have explicit scenes. For more book info on Goodreads, click on the covers.

The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi

Finished on 20 Aug 2020. Review on my blog.

This was a haunting read, the kind of literary fiction that will stay with the reader for a long time. With its heavy main theme of death and incest, The Death of Vivek Oji is fundamentally a beautifully written Nigerian queer tragedy and coming-of-age story.

Payback (Payback #1) by Charlotte Mills

Finished on 22 Aug 2020. Review on Goodreads.

Ever wondered if we have sapphic fiction that are not in the romance genre? That the main characters have other things to do in life in addition to falling in love? Payback series is the kind of mystery we all want.

Throughout most of this book, I admit I struggled with understanding the characters and the plot. The reading itself was a roller coaster ride where I find myself go from “I like this book” to “this is so amazing” in maybe one chapter. I am happy to say that I absolutely did not see the final reveal coming, and after skimming through the book again, everything made perfect sense. Mills is too amazing.

Fair Game (Payback #2) by Charlotte Mills

Finished on 23 Aug 2020. Review on Goodreads.

I highly suggest reading Payback before starting Fair Game. The fact the everything was built from the first book makes this series even more amazing as we follow the sapphic power couple solving crimes. This one is not a romance, but the leading ladies are in love and there is no lack of sex scenes either.

Spindrift (A Seal Cove Romance #1) by Anna Burke

Cover of Spindrift (Anna Burke)
★★★★★

Finished on 24 Aug 2020. Review on my blog.

Writing a first book to a series featuring a group of friends is very difficult, but Burke managed to build all the amazing characters while telling a wonderful romance story. Spindrift is very humorous and fun, even though a big part of the story is about Emilia’s depression and paternal loss. Most of the characters are veterinarians and vet techs, so I guess we will continue to see adorable animals throughout the rest of the series.

Have you read any of these books? What sapphic books did you read this week? Comment what you think!
