Hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook, #5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme where we talk about 5 books on our TBR on Mondays. You can learn more about it in E.’s original announcement or #5OnMyTBR page.
This week’s prompt: Death.
It’s been a while since I posted for #5OnMyTBR, but I’m back again! I’m also currently prepping for blog tours organized by Hear Our Voices Book Tours for You Should See Me In A Crown (Nov 9th) and Rent a Boyfriend (Nov 13th), so be sure to check back here for both tours!

The Other Side of Forestlands Lake by Carolyn Elizabeth
- Publisher: Bella Books, October 15th 2020
- Keywords: second-chance romance, sapphic (f/f), mystery, paranormal
I haven’t read anything by Elizabeth yet but her works seem to be very well-received among the lesfic community. The Other Side of Forestlands Lake is her first venture into paranormal themes and I’ve heard so many great things about it. Check out this review by Jude @judeinthestars.
Mostly Dead Things by Kristen Arnett
- Publisher: Tin House Books, June 4th 2019
- Keywords: queer, suicide, taxidermy
This book wasn’t really on my radar until I read Rach @ Anxious Nachos’ review. It sounds like an amazing, weird book with messy relationships and so much more. Now I’m very intrigued!
The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker by Lauren James
- Publisher: Walker Books, September 3rd 2020
- Keywords: afterlife, paranormal, horror, young adult, queer
Harriet Stoker is pan? Sign me up! I think the story follows several teens as they navigate their afterlives. Since I’ve been hearing a lot about James (check out Emer @ A Little Haze Book Blog’s review), this one seems like a great place to start.
The Black Tide of Heaven (Tensorate #1) by Neon Yang
- Publisher: Tor.com, September 26th 2017
- Keywords: fantasy, novella, trans
Following my recent frustration of trans representation in SFF, I decided to give Yang’s books a try. Plus, they’re Asian. And would you just look at the cover?
Harrow the Ninth (The Locked Tomb Trilogy #2) by Tamsyn Muir
- Publisher: Tor.com, August 4th 2020
- Keywords: sapphics, necromancer, skeletons, SFF, horror
I don’t think this one needs an explanation.
Have you read any of these? What are your #5OnMyTBR with death as a theme? Comment what you think!

I know right??? 😭 And it’s a trans-inclusive fantasy where kids are raised gender-neutral. I’m so excited for it!!

I’m definitely sold, Jude! Recently, I bought an ebook for Gallows Humor and am planning on reading that first, then The Other Side of Forestlands Lake! 😀 Can’t wait!!
