Beyond the Lights by Nicole Higginbotham-Hogue

Content warnings: mention of death of a side character’s parent

Beyond the Lights is a cute novella with great potential. I liked the premise but the writing style threw me off a little and the plot was a bit more absurd than I had expected.

Sawyer Johnson (23) is convinced that she is in love with actress Amy Mitchell, whom she has never met before. When she announces her plan of going cross-country to find Amy, her best friend Autumn Thompson (~23, lesbian), who is secretly in love with Sawyer, decides to tag along, hoping for some quality time together. All plans go out the window as they run into Amy filming a movie in a small town in Montana.

So many people my age have claimed they would read this series to their future children, and I totally share that sentiment. The illustration style is adorable and calming. Without outlines, the texture seemed softer and colour palette even warmer. I love how even when the panels are character closeups, the background is still lush with greenery and flora.

On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden

“No. No way. You don’t get to decide that. You don’t get to decide what’s important for us. You can choose for yourself, but no one else. When you chose not to respect us, we chose not to respect you. […] Have you ever even considered that something that’s trivial to you could mean … so much more to someone else? You don’t get to take the easy road out and just respect the parts of people you recognize. And, pro-tip: If you find yourself in a similar situation in the future where you’re surrounded by people you don’t understand, try listening. It’ll work a lot better for you than talking.”

Soldier of Dorsa by Eliza Andrews

Soldier of Dorsa (The Chronicles of Dorsa #2) by Eliza Andrews

I am definitely biased because I adore Princess of Dorsa.

While Soldier of Dorsa did not grasp my heart as much as the first book did, I still enjoyed it very much. There were times I was so scared for Tasia and Joslyn that I dared not continue reading. But I pushed myself to read on because the suspense of not reading was killing me anyway. The overall plot was very good despite some flow disruptions due to multiple flashbacks and alternations between Tasia’s and Joslyn’s storylines. The pacing was also a bit too fast towards the end as even more things were happening at the same time. I figure the story would flow amazingly if adapted to screen.
