On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden

“No. No way. You don’t get to decide that. You don’t get to decide what’s important for us. You can choose for yourself, but no one else. When you chose not to respect us, we chose not to respect you. […] Have you ever even considered that something that’s trivial to you could mean … so much more to someone else? You don’t get to take the easy road out and just respect the parts of people you recognize. And, pro-tip: If you find yourself in a similar situation in the future where you’re surrounded by people you don’t understand, try listening. It’ll work a lot better for you than talking.”

Jules

Some books leave lasting emotional and visual impressions. On a Sunbeam is one of those books.

It goes without saying that the aesthetics of the graphics is absolutely stunning and the minimalistic website design gorgeous. Apart from the visual aspects of the story, the dialogues and the relationships between the characters are beautifully crafted. Char, Alma, Jules, Ell, Mia, Grace, etc. all have distinct personalities, and the fierce bond between them? It warmed my heart, and I felt so much love everywhere.

Maybe there will be a sequel for On a Sunbeam. Maybe there won’t. But if Walden decided to gift us with one, I hope to understand more of Staircase, Tessian Foxes, why Ell does not speak but sometimes do anyway, what really happened to Sid, and just about everything that has to do with everyone. Yes, I may be a little bit obsessed, and yes, you should read it, too.

Thank you, Tillie, for putting this amazing work on the Internet for everyone to enjoy. It is truly free ambrosia for the souls. [21 Apr 2020]
