2018-19 Winter Break: Day 1 Chicago

Day 1. UIUC – Chicago: Union Station. Amazon Go. Ramen-San. Michigan Avenue. Steppenwolf Theatre. [Freehand Chicago]

For the past several weeks, I have been sort of on hiatus: school was a bit demanding and I didn’t get to write as much as I had hoped to. I did write a lot of essays for homework though, and maybe that’s why I avoided blogging so much. To make up for the lost posts, I have decided to take you guys along with my winter break trip! This is the first time for me to solo travel for more than two weeks, and I am so excited! Throughout the course of my trip, I will post everyday to share what I have been doing that day. In the next 24 days, I plan to visit around 10 states in the United States, and today, December 21st, 2018, marks my first day.

Theatre Review: An American Daughter [Illinois Theatre]

Note: This theatre critique of An American Daughter is for my THEA170 class assignment.
This production of An American Daughter was in a black box theatre with a thrust stage. Since I have had the chance of seeing the set a week before the opening of the show on a Krannert Center tour, the first thing I noticed as I got to the theatre on the performance night was the boys’ clothings and toys scattered around the room. I walked around the stage to take in the set up of all the furniture, and it was indeed a very lovely living room.

Music Review: Los Angeles Master Chorale: Lagrime di San Pietro (Tears of St. Peter)

    Aurally & Visually Astounding (5/5) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Performance Type: Music, Choir
This was my first show at Krannert Center of the Performing Arts.
I fell in love with the place the first time I stepped into the lobby for orientation. It was everything I can hope for for a performance arts venue in a school. Maybe even in a city. I doubt I have ever seen any other place that is better than this. Subsequently, I couldn’t stop myself from looking through the schedule and bought tickets to many performances ranging from symphony orchestra to theatre productions. I want to spend all my time there. Krannert Center of the Performing Arts is probably my favourite place on campus, or second to Main Library; I haven’t quite decided yet, but it is definitely a grand building with 4 wonderful theatres.
To be honest, when I arrived at Foellinger Great Hall for Los Angeles Master Chorale: Lagrime di San Pietro (Tears of St. Peter), I did not even know I was about to watch a choir performance of spiritual music; there were priests in the audience. Earlier that afternoon, I was at Champaign Pride, and so now, with everyone else around me all dressed up, I immediately became very self-conscious of my casual wear and rainbow flag sticking out of my backpack.

    Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

    Cover of Autoboyography (Christina Lauren)

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren, read by Deacon Lee & Kyle Mason

Autoboyography is a very cute and sweet story between a bisexual high school senior, Tanner, and a Mormon Brother, Sebastian. It is the sort of book that provides hope for readers, especially young and queer ones, but, sadly, does not reflect the real world. The overall story is a dream too good to be true. Maybe that is part of the reason why it was enjoyable: you get things you don’t get out of life. Deacon did a great job at narrating, too, even though he didn’t sound much like a high schooler. He gave this story a calmness that makes it even more soothing to listen to. Also, I finished the book in two days. That is approximately two sittings, which is weirdly fast for me.
