WLW Wednesday

WLW Wednesday — 9 Sep 2020

WLW Wednesday is a bookish meme among bloggers who read sapphic books. Hosted by Sasha and Amber @ Sasha and Amber Read, we are encouraged share our recent wlw/sapphic reads every week or two.

Since my last WLW Wednesday post was two weeks ago, I am sharing every sapphic book I’ve read during this time! Being more than two weeks into grad school had me realize that I barely have time to read, so I guess my participation in WLW Wednesday will be biweekly from now on.

Also, if you are like me and already daydreaming of what to read in 2021, check out this list of 2021 sapphic releases I put together with information kindly supplied by all my favorite indies!

Over the past two weeks, I’ve read six sapphic novels (three adult f/f romance and three YA fantasy) and one discontinued sapphic webcomic. For more info on Goodreads, click on the covers.

Cover of A Shot at Gold (Nicole Pyland)
★★★★★

A Shot at Gold (Sports #2) by Nicole Pyland

Finished on 26 Aug 2020. Review on my blog.

Pyland writes incredibly fast yet her stories always feature the most beautiful romance and wonderful characters. A Shot at Gold was a very emotional read for me, and I loved every minute of it. The book is about loss, certainty, and archery.

Fluttering Feelings by Ssamba

Finished on 29 Aug 2020. Review on Goodreads.

The amount of yearning in this South Korean webcomic is off-the-charts. Unfortunately, main characters No-rae and Seol-a never actually become a couple due to the author’s failing health. This manhwa was discontinued in 2016 and Ssamba sadly passed away in 2018.

Cover of Daughter of Fire: Conspiracy of the Dark (Karen Frost)
★★★

Daughter of Fire: Conspiracy of the Dark (Destiny and Darkness #1) by Karen Frost

Finished on 30 Aug 2020. Review on Goodreads.

It is a little weird that this is only half of book. Being part one of Daughter of Fire, the plot line is far from complete, and I definitely recommend reading part two as well if you ever read this. The story follows a teenage girl discovering her powerful fire magic and finding herself in a mage university.

Cover of Daughter of Fire: The Darkness Rising (Karen Frost)
★★★★

Daughter of Fire: The Darkness Rising (Destiny and Darkness #2) by Karen Frost

Finished on 2 Sep 2020. Review on Goodreads.

In this second part, there is a more prominent and cute YA romance storyline in addition to all the magic, mages, and plots.

Cover of The Unexpected Dream (Nicole Pyland)
★★★★

The Unexpected Dream (Sports #3) by Nicole Pyland

Finished on 3 Sep 2020. Review on my blog.

This is the kind of pitcher/catcher romance sapphics need. Plus, one of the main characters Mia is a bisexual single mother with a two-year-old daughter, so if you like some family adorableness between Mia’s love interest Sky and the toddler, this will probably make you squeal.

Cover of Destiny's Choice (Karen Frost)
★★★★

Destiny’s Choice (Destiny and Darkness #3) Karen Frost

Finished on 5 Sep 2020. Review on Goodreads.

I really enjoyed Frost’s writing but cannot really say the same for the plot. The book was enjoyable, but as someone who loves a good character-driven story, Destiny’s Choice is not one of those. But hey, I love how thought-provoking this YA fantasy is.

Cover of Presidential (Lola Keeley)

Presidential by Lola Keeley

Finished on 9 Sep 2020.

There has been an ongoing debate on whether or not this book is too similar to The American President. I have yet to read the script, but I would say this is a presidential romance reimagined with a leading bisexual woman dating another woman.

Have you read any of these books? What sapphic books did you read this week? Comment what you think!

You managed to read lots of sapphic books in two weeks!! I love Fluttering Feelings so so much!! I’m so sad about the author and that there will never be an ending still! TT-TT It was so good and I finally had a good uni romance to squeel over!! So sad! <3

I think you have been rather generous with your review of Destiny’s Choice. The plot was formulaic and predictable and required much more embellishment with detail. This book could have created a wondrous world of understanding about a 40 year war and offer hope from alliances built but all it offered was a loose predictable plot, lame characters and an inconclusive finish. There were numerous unanswered questions about Dark Magic and I wondered whether the author had become bored with the story. I certainly won’t be buying the next book.

Thanks for reading, Prima! I quite agree with your thoughts on the plot. It wasn’t as good as it could be and was very random, but I truly enjoyed Destiny’s Choice for its writing. Maybe the next one would have a better plot; maybe not. Yet I’m really excited about what thoughts and ideas it might bring!

School just started so it’s not too demanding yet. Hopefully I’ll still be able to read half as many in a week or two! 🤞🏼 And A Shot of Gold is worth a try! I know virtually nothing about archery and it was still a wonderful read! Hope you’ll enjoy it if you decide to give it try! Thank you, Rach!! 💖

Feel free to share your thoughts!
