Hi, lovely people (and bots, if there are any)! I know I haven’t been super engaging lately nor posted in *checks calendar* five days (gasp), but I am back now! My first midterms have officially ended and I’m honestly wiped. This weekend is going to be so much better because not only am I blogging again, I am also planning on reading a lot more to make up for all the lost time over the past few weeks!
Thanks to the bewitching Mel @ Cotton Candy Book Witch for tagging me! Check out their wonderful post here. The Fall Time Cozy Time Book Tag was originated by booktuber Sam’s Nonsense, and I am going to use this as another perfect chance to highlight under-appreciated sapphic indie books I love! (If you haven’t seen my list of 2021 sapphic releases by LGBTQ+ indies, read it here, bookmark it, and check back again later for more updated info and new books!)
I meant to do this on Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節), which was October 1st this year, but schoolwork got the better of me and I sadly missed the date. But hey, it’s still autumn and super chilly in the Midwest (or maybe I am just this subtropical being who cannot take the temperate climate), so now is the perfect time to stay home, stay safe, and stay cozy by a fireplace or in warm sheets!
Crunching Leaves: a book with reds/oranges/yellows on the cover
I didn’t even need to hesitate. I know I already talk about it too much, but Finding Jessica Lambert (self-published) by Welsh author Clare Ashton is one of the best sapphic romance I have ever read. As someone who doesn’t like much angst (life is too stressful already), this story has only a little angst toward the end like most wlw fiction. It is a very beautiful book, and for more of my thoughts, read my full review here.
Cozy Sweater: a book that gives you warm fuzzies
After some thinking, I decided to go with While My Heart Beats (Bold Strokes Books) by Erin McKenzie. This is a heartwarming historical romance set in World War I but without too much horrifying war details. You can read my review here.
Fall Storm: favorite book or genre that to read on a stormy day
Basically anything sweet, sapphic, and adorable. Sapphic isn’t a must, but it’s always a plus. 😉
Cool Crisp Air: the coolest character to trade places with
I don’t know if I would say “the coolest” since there are definitely other cool characters I want to get acquainted though certainly not trade places with, but Molly from Quinn Ivins’s The Love Factor (Ylva Publishing) is such an academic badass! And she gets to be with Carmen, so that’s great. If you like lesbians taking down a sexist, homophobic man using mathematics, you will also want to be them. Read my full review here.
Hot Apple Cider: an under-hyped book that needs to become the next biggest, hottest thing
I mean… The majority of the books I read are pretty under-hyped, judging by statistics like the Goodreads review counts versus how long they have been published. But I would say Keeping Long Island (Pepper Books) by Australian author Courtney Peppernell, which is also very under-hyped within the sapphic and lesfic communities. It is one of my all-time favorite books. I did my review a while back in 2018, which you can read here, and I literally began by saying this book deserves so much more attention.
Coat, Scarves, and Mittens: the most embarrassing book cover
We need all the positive vibes, so I’m not going to answer this one, even though embarrassing doesn’t equate bad.
Pumpkin Spice: favorite fall time comfort food
Mooncakes. 🥮 Always mooncakes. 🥮 I’d include some pictures with the yummy food, but I didn’t get to have any this year and I’m super sad about that. At least I had pineapple cakes on Mid-Autumn Festival though.
Warm, Cozy Bonfire: who do you tag?
