WLW Wednesday

WLW Wednesday — 21 Oct 2020

WLW Wednesday is a bookish meme among bloggers who read sapphic books. Hosted by Sasha and Amber @ Sasha and Amber Read, we are encouraged share our recent wlw/sapphic reads every week or two.

I know it’s no longer October 21st, but my cutoff day is on Wednesday so here I am, four days late, sharing what sapphic books I read over the past two weeks (since my last WLW Wednesday post)! I also totally intended on doing monthly wrap-ups, but the one for August is still no where to be seen. Pretty sure I am not running on Earth time anymore.

Thanks to the awesomest Sapphic Saturday readathon and many lovely bookish friends, I managed to read a ton of wonderful books! And these are not all the books I’ve read, either, just the sapphic ones. Over the past two weeks, I read seven sapphic novels (two YA fantasy, two YA horror, two adult f/f romance, one adult sci-fi) and one sapphic novella (adult f/f romance).

Cute Mutants Vol 1: Mutant Pride by SJ Whitby

Finished on 10 Oct 2020. Review on my blog.

This superhero sapphic YA was such a joy! The story follows several high schoolers after they recently discovered their superpowers. It is funny, quirky, and very queer! I loved every minute of it and cannot wait to read its sequels!

Cover of Wilder Girls (Rory Power)
★★★★

Wilder Girls by Rory Power

Finished on 13 Oct 2020. Review to come.

As my first venture into the horror genre, I think I didn’t do half bad. I love Power’s writing and the narrative is just beautiful. The story was a bit gory but not so revolting since I managed to eat while reading. This was a buddy read with Cas.

Cover of The Other Women (Erin Zak)
★★★

The Other Woman by Erin Zak

Finished on 13 Oct 2020. Review on my blog.

Zak surprised me with her wonderful execution of incorporating the theme of infidelity into a completely believable romance. It was low angst and mostly very sweet.

Thorn by Anna Burke

Cover of Thorn (Anna Burke)
★★★★

Finished on 17 Oct 2020. Review to come.

This is a gorgeous sapphic retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I initially wondered if I could love a story where the prisoner fell for her captor, but Burke managed to make their connection real, raw, and romantic. I read this for Sapphic Saturday.

Cover of Get It Right (Skye Kilaen)
★★★★

Get It Right (Love at Knockdown #1) by Skye Kilaen

Finished on 17 Oct 2020. Review to come.

This novella is a romance between a fat pansexual nurse and formerly incarcerated butch. It deals with so many important subjects including injustice in prison systems, abortion rights, etc. Kilaen did such a wonderful job at this story I am excited to see what she has for us for the rest of the series. I read this for Sapphic Saturday.

Cover of The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet (Becky Chambers)
★★★★

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet (Wayfarer #1) by Becky Chambers

Finished on 17 Oct 2020. Initial thoughts on Goodreads. Full review to come.

I love all the philosophical questions in this story and seeing humanity through the eyes of alien species. This was a buddy read with E.

Cover of Finding a Keeper (Nicole Pyland)
★★★★

Finding a Keeper (Sports #4) by Nicole Pyland

Finished on 18 Oct 2020. Review on Goodreads.

I have yet to read a Pyland’s book where I didn’t love the characters or their romance. This final installment in the Sports series is centered around soccer, and I love Sloan’s journey of realizing her own feelings for her best-friend-cum-teammate Marley is a little more than platonic.

Cover of Burn Our Bodies Down (Rory Power)
★★★

Burn Our Bodies Down by Rory Power

Finished on 21 Oct 2020. Initial thoughts on Goodreads. Full review to come.

This is the second horror and Power book I’ve read this month. Her writing is stunning and this story more creepy than I had anticipated. The final reveal was a little anticlimactic but I did enjoy this book overall. This was a buddy read with Brittany.
